Floriade 2022 by MVRDV Dutch architects  MVRDV  have proposed extending the city of Almere into a lake by building a square-shaped artificial peninsula covered in gardens (+ slideshow). The 45 hectare extension is part of the Dutch city’s bid to host the  World Horticultural Expo  in 2022 and would host the six-month festival as well as providing land to build a new university plus offices, homes and leisure facilities. Designs for the exhibition comprise a patchwork of gardens that the architects have called a “plant library” as well as a series of pavilions and greenhouses. Once the expo is over, the green development would provide a permanent addition to the fast-developing city that was first established in 1976 on the outskirts of Amsterdam. “We dream of making green cities,” says Winy Maas of MVRDV. “A city that is literally green as well as ecological. A dense city with an open landscape How to combine a dense city with an open landscape ? Europa City by BIG Architects is the chosen project for the Europa City in Paris, France. Europa City will offer, on an unprecedented scale, a mix of retail, culture and leisure around a defining theme: Europe, its diversity, its urban experiences and its cultures. Rather than orienting Europa City towards the highway, we propose to integrate it as the natural center of a new business district. We propose an urban form that combines dense city with open landscape, exploring the urban and green potentials of the site at once. We propose a commercial city that becomes a gathering point for the surrounding neighborhoods– a new kind of commercial center that is blended into the urban texture, and includes rather than excludes the surrounding city.
